Young People Consist Majority of Social Network Users

Majority of online social networking users are young people, according to Pew Internet & American Life Project.

The research group released on Wednesday its latest report which revealed that 65 percent of teenagers between 12 to 17 have profiles in social sites and 75 percent of young adults aged 18 to 24 use online community sites.

Pew surveyed 2,250 Internet users few months ago and found that only 35 percent of adults were using social sites.

While the number of adult using online communities is relatively small, this is a remarkable increase compared to 8 percent adult users in 2004.

The research group also discovered that as age increased, the less likely a person will join social network.  In Pew’s findings, only 7 percent of people aged 65 and older are using social community sites.

One major finding is that 17 percent of adult users have more than one profile in a single social networking site and another 4 percent use profiles to represent their different personalities.

According to Pew senior research specialist Amanda Lenhart, adults will have different profiles to represent each interest and hobby such as sports, politics, dating, books, etc.

The study also revealed there is no difference between the number of male and female users.

Meanwhile, there is a great disparity between races.  For example, 43 percent of Blacks have social network account, which is higher compared to 31 percent of Whites.  Hispanics have the highest number of online community users, almost 50 percent.

Another major finding is that people belonging from low-income households are more like to use social networking sites compared to richer individuals.
