Virtual World for Web-centric Muslims
Muxlim, a popular social networking for Muslims, was planning to introduce the first virtual world that will cater for web-centric believers of Islam.
The company’s plan will be highly based from Second Life which is an online game where people can create their own virtual community, but this will be tailor-made to be consistent with the teaching of the religion. For example, women in the virtual community will still be required to wear headscarves, hijab, or burqa. Also, virtual residents should oblige to the Islam teachings such as going to the mosque and praying five times a day.
Also, Muxlim is planning to adopt the same business model of Second Life where there is a market place for business, trade, and commerce.
Meanwhile, these changes are much accepted by moderate Muslims and those believers who live in Europe and US. For now, countries from the Middle East will more likely block this service since governments and traditionalists perceive online games, social networking sites, and virtual communities inappropriate for their culture and tradition.
As expected, some traditionalists and hard-core Muslims will not like this plan, believing that Internet will more likely malign the minds of people especially the youths. But for those moderate believers, this is a good news for them because the virtual world may serve as their way to express themselves more freely compared to the puritanical world of most Middle Eastern countries.
According to some experts, Internet Technology has the power to change the social setting, either in a good or bad way, and that there will be a time that religions and institutions will be the ones which must change and adapt itself in order to survive in this ever changing world.
Meanwhile, the company is planning to introduce its new service four to six weeks from now.
