Videogame Platform, Future of MySpace – News Corp
The owner of Internet giant MySpace.com on Thursday revealed plans of transforming the lagging social networking platform into a more viable video gaming website in line with its masterplan to reclaim the title as the one of the most sought after entertainment destination in the internet.
In an interview, News Corp digital head Jonathan Miller said that they are now finalizing plans to expand the gaming capability of MySpace after recent years of being dominated by Facebook.com.
The six-year-old social networking site, according to Miller, has all the important tools for the development.
He said that opportunities have been presented to him following discussions with gaming giants who expressed interests in launching their products on the social networking site.
“Game developers want to employ MySpace’s user data for the development of the games. From that time on, the website will be more of a gaming platform rather than a social networking site. It will be more of a space for people to play online games and even converse,” he said.
MySpace changed direction following projections from analysts that it could not compete with Google’s Youtube.com in terms of video sharing, which leaves the social networking site one last option in the form of online gaming.
“Our focus in the new platform that we will offer to our users, MySpace can revitalize itself with the help of videogames,” Miller said.
To date, Facebook remains the top social networking site in the Internet with more than 200 million active users. In April alone, the social network registered more than 307 million unique hits, which is more than half of what MySpace made (125 million hits).
In June, US users that logged in Facebook reached 76.3 million surpassing MySpace in its own turf.
Miller, on the other hand, stressed that the move was not meant for MySpace alone. He said that the shift in a gaming platform will also benefit News Corp along with other companies under its name (Fox Network, Movie Studios, and other Media Companies).
