Verizon Provides Social Services on TVs

Communication service provider Verizon FiOS TV recently announced its new social-television services that will allow subscribers to connect to popular online communities and user-generated websites.

One of the newly-launched services, Widget bazaar, allows people to visit micro-blogging Twitter, Facebook, and ESPN Fantasy Football which is an interactive sports game.

Meanwhile, the company said it will add new features and widgets made by its developers and other software companies in the next few months.

According to Verizon, the Tweet widget will allow users to follow “tweets” (messages) related to a television program they are watching, select topics of their interest, and create personalized favorite-topic list.

Widget Bazaar also allows Facebook users to log in and update their accounts and view their friends’ profiles.

Another social service, Internet Video on TV, will allow subscribers to access video-sharing websites such as Veoh, blip.tv, Dailymotion, and other user-generated video sites.

In a statement, a Verizon official said that this Internet video service will change the way people use their televisions.

Growing Demand for Social Platforms

Verizon’s new services are efforts to tap the lucrative market of social platforms.  According to a recent Nielsen report, the number of Americans using social sites has increased by nearly 400 percent from 2003 to 2009.

Several studies also suggested that social network sites have replaced emails that most people use these more often to send personal messages to their friends.

Meanwhile, in terms of videos, the research group also said that the time spent on video websites (e.g. user-generated, video-sharing, and live video streaming) has increased by approximately 2,000 percent since 2003.
