The World Wide Web offers a variety of social networks for teens and adults today. Different sets of connections have shot upwards thanks to popular sites like MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, and more recently, MyYearbook. Founded by then 15-year-old Catherine and 16-year-old David Cook, MyYearbook.com is now one of the leading teen destination websites in the online world. As of July 30, 2008, the company has earned $18.6 million from a small start of $250,000 in 2005. The site pretty much targets high school kids and teens, after the boom of networks on the internet.

The Social Networking Propaganda

The idea of being able to converse and meet with different people through the use of a simple web program is a wondrous feat for any teenager. What started out to be a “project” for two hopeful teenagers, Catherine and David, turned out to be a massive internet hit in the long run. The two siblings managed to persuade their older brother Geoff Cook, now CEO of MyYearbook.com, to fund their little dream on setting up a network site for their school. The website first took off on April 2005 for students in New Jersey Montgomery High School. MyYearbook was intended to be a tool for students to be in constant communication with one another and keep records of pupils from several batches.
In the next two years, members helped contribute additional features and programs within the website. Today MyYearbook.com has 150 million hits and 5 million new cyber guests. As per internet demographics, 90% of the web site’s active users are American. As of today, the network has already gathered 16.1 million members, which still continues to grow in number.

The Colorful World of MyYearbook

The layout of MyYearbook’s is very eye-catching for young web surfers. With its colorful walls and boxes, MyYearbook.com creates a fantasy world for all online teens. It features sections like Pimp and Battles that present interactive web programs for members. Other social networks can also use most applications, presenting easily movable graphics and user-friendly codes.
One of the widely-used clicks in the website is the Causes section. Causes serves as a charity instrument in providing monetary donations and assistance for nonprofit organizations or sponsors. The sponsors, in turn, reach out to the different sectors in need of the society’s attention. It highlights societal issues like poverty, hunger or animal protection. To support the application, MyYearbook has begun a system that awards Lunch Money to give to Causes for each sponsored action. Although MyYearbook membership is free of charge, this feature requires fiscal contribution.

New Relationships

In July 2008, MyYearbook.com has secured an investment deal by financial giant Norwest Venture Partners (NVP), an international capital firm venturing in entrepreneurial partnership and business. Other investors also took part in the deal including US Venture Partners and First Round Capital. The Series B investment was worth $13 million. Sergio Monsalve, who has worked with big name companies like eBay and Photobucket, took a seat as part of the company’s board of directors.
