Social Sites More Popular than E-mails: Nielsen Report

Social networking sites and blogs are more popular online properties than personal email among netizens, according to a Nielsen report on Monday.

The research firm said the time spent in online community and blog sites is growing three times faster, adding that an average net user spends one in every 11 minutes in these web properties.  With this result, experts believe that this has become the new trend for Web 2.0 era.

The study also revealed that more than 75 percent of web users is constantly visiting social networking community and blog sites, beating other leading online properties including portals, search, emails, and PC software.

The survey was conducted in nine global markets including USA where 67 percent netizens visit social and blog sites; Spain with 75 percent; and Brazil with the highest percentage of 80 percent.

Meanwhile, the Nielsen study has supported previous ComScore report which said that Facebook is the most popular social networking sites with one in every 10 web users visiting its webpage every day.

Earlier report also said that Facebook is the seventh most popular online properties in the world.

Mobile social networking, or online sites specifically created for Internet-enabled handsets, is also on the rise, with over 10.6 million users in US alone.  This new kind of social networking is growing at a rate of 158 percent compared to last year.

With the unprecedented popularity of social networking sites and blogs, experts warn people to be careful in revealing sensitive information which can be used by identity thefts and fraudster, adding that they should be responsible in using the Internet.
