Social Network Traffic Floods Blackberry System
Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of the popular Blackberry device, revealed that social networking traffic in its system has significantly increased in the past 12 months as more people go mobile.
In a statement, RIM chief information officer Robin Bienfait said that the company is now handling over a billion e-mail messages every day. He added that a huge chunk of the electronic data traffic goes to the use of social networking.
Based on the RIM record, the highest growth rate in its system traffic goes to BBM at 650 percent.
Meanwhile, application downloads registered over 400 percent and web browsing at 291 percent.
Facebook got 155 percent of the traffic while business e-mails, which is the supposed bread and butter of the Blackberry device, only got 126 percent.
“It is very surprising the e-mail message only got 20 percent of the total traffic in the system while Facebook and BBM got the highest scores from the people using the device,” Bienfait said during her speech at the WES 2010 in Orlando, Florida.
The Blackberry device for many years has been synonymous with e-mails and corporate clients. However, the sudden boom of mobile social networking has forced RIM to provide special market for the youth, which is now overtaking what is originally intended for the device.
Bienfait admitted that they are having a hard time managing the electronic traffic but stressed that the company has been doing a lot of heavy lifting to cope up with the increase in demand.
She added that the RIM, despite the explosion in usage of the Blackberry, will not need additional major infrastructure and systems upgrade. She said that, so far, the entire system can handle a billion more e-mails every day.
“We have the entire system in place and right now, we are just scaling up,” she added.
