No Plans for Advertisement in 2009 – Twitter

Biz Stone, the co-founder of the popular microblogging website Twitter, on Tuesday said that they have no plans to put up online advertisements in their website despite the calls by ad agencies for the company to start making money out of its 2-year popularity.

In a statement, Stone stressed that Twitter has no problems with the funding, saying that the Internet Company is doing “pretty good” at the moment.

Instead, Stone said that they are focusing their sights to the enhancement of several features of Twitter, which include an improved search function for commercials that are paid-for.

“We are not thinking of it (advertising) just yet. It’s going to be awhile before we take any kind of approach toward online advertising,” the co-founder said in the 140: Twitter conference in Los Angeles, California.

Twitter’s popularity came after people recognized the function of its 140-character blogs which can be sent out to a network of friends.

Celebrities like Oprah and Ashton Kutcher were among those identified as heavy “tweet” senders.

In a related development, Twitter, which remains as a privately-held company, recently receive several venture funding.

However, Stone refused to detail the amount and the terms of the said ventures.

Earlier, a report by TechCrunch told that a new round of funding would add up to the microblogging’s worth, rounding up the numbers to some $1 billion.

Stone said that they are in no hurry in having investors into the company, saying that they will soon offer premium features of Twitter to users who have commercial accounts.

Twitter, like other social networking websites, are yet to agree on receiving advertising profits from companies who are waiting for the go signal to have their ads included in the platforms’ webpages.

“We are here to stay and we are making money despite no advertising,” Stone said.

Meanwhile, Stone claimed that the new features that will be included in the commercial accounts will be sold to users.

He added that these features will include “light analytic” tools that would allow the account users to have an interaction and gather information on their networking of friends.
