Mainstream Social Network Lacks Privacy—SelectMinds
With the growing popularity of social networking sites, experts warn that these Internet properties lack privacy which makes users prone to identity thieves, fraudsters, spammers, and all kinds of online threats.
SelectMinds, a social networking solution provider, said that executives and IT departments should be aware of the danger, risk, and misuse of social platforms within the company.
The firm said that the inappropriate use of social networks has resulted to different problems in the workplace, mentioning that irresponsible users end up embarrassing themselves or other co-workers.
SelectMinds CEO Anne Berkowitch said that inappropriate behavior on social platforms have resulted to numerous work-related problems.
Meanwhile, many companies have already blocked social platforms on its servers especially Facebook, Multiply, and MySpace since top officials believe that their employees are less productive when such distraction is present in the work area. But contrary to this belief, there are special cases when social platforms can maximize productivity, especially that many people are using social networks in sending work-related messages.
Berkowitch said that the open nature of social networks means that these online properties are not secure.
Meanwhile, she said that users can lower the risk associated in using social networks such as integrating dedicated tools, adding that these online properties can improve a company when properly used as a way to communicate and interact with employees.
The chief executive said corporate social networks are important for many businesses based on the their study which revealed that 26 percent of HR staffs are using social sites to communicate with other people, mostly company workers.
Berkowitch also said that 20 percent of companies have no networking solutions, forcing employees to use mainstream sites which are often unsecured and prone to different online threats.
