Google FriendConnect Announces New Feature

Google FriendConnect, a service which allows websites to use social network tools, has recently added new social media functions that will promote more open interaction among people.

Google announced on Wednesday the new “social bar” which allows site visitors to log into a web site, edit their profiles, change settings, and interact with other people.  Meanwhile, web site administrators can put this tool bar on the lower or upper part of their web page.

One advantage of using this social feature is that users are not required to manually update all their social accounts.  By using the “social bar”, people can change their profiles and provide added information to a single social media site which will then aggregate the input to the users’ other accounts.

Because of the data portability, users have more freedom in their social profile accounts, making it easier to upload video and image files, write blog entry, interact with people included in the friend’s lists, and change the information.

Meanwhile, despite the convenience of social application for Internet users and companies, experts raise a major concern regarding the privacy issue, saying that protection and people’s data privacy may be more vulnerable to online threats and other illicit activities with social applications.

Last year, Facebook which is the world’s biggest social networking site, has blocked FriendConnect feature saying that the social application violates the privacy of Facebook members since their information and data were used “in a way that they cannot understand”.

Despite Facebook’s move to block Google’s FriendConnect, the online community introduced its own social tool called Facebook Connect which allows users to log-in to affiliated websites to share information to their friends.
