Facebook, Twitter Officials Express Support for Net Neutrality

Some 24 executives of major technological companies in the US, including social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, have expressed their support for net neutrality following speeches from Democrats at the House of Representatives who were concerned over its implementation.

In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, tech company executives said that the openness and the implementation of net neutrality will ensure growth and competitiveness among firms that operates in the World Wide Web.

“We honestly believe that a process, which resulted in common baseline rules, is critical in ensuring the role of the Internet. And we believe the it will play a vital role or a key engine in the economic growth of the US in terms of innovations and global competitiveness,” the chief executive officers of the companies told FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski in the letter.

The group called themselves as the Open Internet Coalition (OIC) is headed by Twitter co-founder Evan Williams and Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Other CEOs who signed the letter include eBay chief exec John Donahoe, Youtube founder Steve Chan, and Google chief exec Eric Schmidt.

Also, the OIC said that an open Internet not only ensure competitive atmosphere among businesses but also provides an efficient marketplace for other small, medium enterprises.

“With net neutrality, it is the consumers who dictate who succeed and who will fail, thus, ensure the competitiveness in the market,” the group added.

“We also believe that an open Internet yields economic activities, growth, and opportunity by allowing even the smallest of business to compete against those larger corporations,” OIC said.

Based on earlier reports, the FCC will release the official guidelines on net neutrality on Thursday’s meeting for October.

Also earlier, Genachowski has proposed supplemental guidelines in the existing Internet Policy Principles following several cases of Internet Service Providers blocking several websites, which he claimed were abuse of its powers.

Under the new law, ISPs would be prevented from discriminating websites over its services while allowing a more reasonable network management for the companies. Transparency issues will also be implemented.
