Facebook Remains Strong Amidst Recession
Despite the ongoing economic recession which is expected to be protracted and deep, popular social networking site Facebook remains strong as it continuously attracts millions of unique visitors worldwide.
According to a report released by Comscore conducted in November 2008, the online community has more than 200 million unique site visitors from around the world, with a ratio of one in every five people going online visited the site. The result also revealed that Facebook has more than 10 percent growth every month.
Comscore also said that in December 2008, more than 20 percent of Internet users registered to Facebook.
Meanwhile, Facebook’s rival MySpace still remains the most popular social networking site in United States. But despite being on top, experts have predicted that Facebook will topple MySpace and will be the most widely-used online community in the next year.
Comscore also revealed that Facebook had 80 billion page views in December with MySpace trailing behind with 43 billion views, almost half of its rival. Just six months ago, the two online community sites have almost the same webpage views.
When asked for opinion, MySpace officials said the company focuses more in boosting its profits and revenue coming from big advertising deal with businesses, adding that international revenue increased by 30 percent compared to previous year.
MySpace also said that popularity in the US provides advantage as majority of advertising revenue comes from this turf.
Meanwhile, earlier report said that MySpace shut down its Amsterdam office as it failed to attract locals.
Facebook has also tried to penetrate some foreign turfs, but in Netherland, its unique visitors were lower than expected.
