Cyber Bullying: Harsher than School Ground
Social networking sites are becoming more popular nowadays. With the advent of Internet technology, online communities are further expanding to the extent that sometimes, it can permeate to the real world.
While these web-based communities allow people to share their ideas and activities to the world, in some ways, these can be exploited by anyone.
One of the biggest problems of social networking sites is cyber bullying which can be even harsher than school grounds. Perhaps the most popular stories is about Megan Meier who committed suicide because someone had sent her hurtful and depressing messages which had forced her to kill herself. (The girl had been diagnosed with deep depression and attention deficit disorder which made her more susceptible to stress.)
According to a recent study, 22 percent of children and young adults have experienced cyber bullying. With this alarming trend, the Department for Children, Schools, and Families (DCSF) has created a website which provides Internet-users with the right knowledge, practical advice, and issues about online harassment.
While there is no single way to address this looming problem, there are methods which can prevent cyber bullying.
· Spreading awareness to the community. This means that school officials, parents, and students should know that bullying does not only happen in the four corners of classrooms because this social problem can also permeate inside online communities.
· There should be an entity which will look into the welfare of young children. Parents and school officials should look closely to the students while providing lenient rules and policies that will protect young children from cyber bullying. Also, this governing body should make sure that there some form of punishment for those people who will misuse Internet technology to harm others.
· The governing body should encourage people to use the Internet technology in a very constructive way.
