British Politicians Irk over Spy Chief’s Family Details on Facebook
Several British politicians irked over several newspaper reports showing photos of MI6 Intelligence Agency Chief John Sawers on his wife’s Facebook account.
Officials called the incident as “lapse in security” while others call it “mild embarrassing domestic detail.”
Sawers, 53, is the newly appointed chief for the spy agency. He started office last month.
Meanwhile, the said Facebook account showed several pictures of the Sawers family during a holiday.
Sawers, in a photo, was seen wearing trunks while playing Frisbee with his children on the beach. Another photo showed that he was wearing a Santa hat during the Christmas season.
The account was then removed from the popular networking site after published reports, saying that the webpage was showing vital information about Sawers and his family.
However, other users can still view the cached Shelley Sawers page.
Meanwhile, Secretary for Foreign Affairs David Miliband came to Sawers aid, saying that the photos reveal nothing but “pictures of a British family”. He added that it is not a “state secret” that the spy chief wears Speedo during times at the beach.
A far from that, the official refused to comment on the details of the case.
On the other hand, Lawmaker Patric Mercer, a known conservative and head of the counterterrorism subcommittee of the British Parliament said that the spy chief had exposed himself and such revelations can make him open to blackmails and criticisms.
Sawers will have his post until November. However, the issue has sparked discussions on lowering down his term.
The intelligence chief was a former spy for MI6, a former diplomat and ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair’s former policy adviser. Sawers is also currently UK’s United Nations ambassador.
MI6 was a top-secret organization until the 1990s. Its former chiefs were formerly called C. Britain, also in the early 90s, still refused to confirm its existence.
