Bebo is an acronym for “Blog Early, Blog Often.” This site was founded in January of 2005, and is widely used all over the world.
It is an internet based social network site – one of the many social network sites where people can connect to the world and show who they are. Creating an account would, of course, require the user to register, thus an e-mail account and a password is needed so that the user can be informed about any updates, comments, friend requests, new blogs, and other events that the user may be interested in. After registering, the user then becomes a member of the Bebo community and can now view other registered users’ public accounts, and then he or she may invite them to become part of his or her list of friends. This is a feature that is common to all social network sites.
Having created an account, the user may then create and edit his or her profile – the skin, for one. This is the user’s site’s layout, the user page’s appearance: how the user would want his page to look like. He or she may choose the background from a selection of templates. Another profile feature is the privacy. Creating an account, the user’s profile is by default private. This allows only users in his or her list of friends to be able to view his or her account. The user may then change this using the “public profile” option so that users from other schools that he or she may have joined may view his or her profile as well.
Other features are Messaging, Blogs, Music, Authors, Groups, Mobile, and Open Media Platform. Messaging and Blogs are features common to all social network sites. Messaging allows the user to send messages to other contacts, just like the commonly used e-mail messaging. Blogs allow the user to write anything he or she pleases for other users to see.
Bebo Music allows the user to upload music and group them into albums. This feature was originally launched as Bebo Bands, where bands can have a special place in this special group within the user’s profile. This includes a list of band members and a list of fans – this is like a sub-group of the user’s entire list of contacts. In this feature, the band members may advertise their band and post their tour dates. This is exclusively editable by members of this specific group within the user’s list.
Bebo Authors allows writing enthusiasts to display their works for their contacts to view. In this module the user may upload chapters of his or her books or display his or her poetry works.
Bebo Groups enable the user to group his or her friends. Only other school members are allowed to view groups that are joined to a school, also allows the user to join groups of other contacts who have common interests.
Bebo Mobile allows the user to receive text alerts in his or her mobile phone, regarding updates such as receiving new comments in his or her site, or receiving new contact requests.
Bebo Open Media Platform enables certain registered companies to advertise themselves to the community through the site’s Adobe Flash Player.
This site not only connects the user to friends near and far, but compared to other social networking sites, Bebo helps more in his or her life as a career person, as it provides outlets for bands and authors, and inlets for companies to advertise.
